Chief:
David Hall |
The Harrison Police Department is
located at the corner of North Street and Pleasant Ridge Road. The
emergency telephone number is 911 and the general number is
967-5111.
The Police Department has 70 community-minded men and women who make
Harrison a great place to live.
The Department is community oriented in its policing policies and
procedures. For example, there is a bicycle squad, a motorcycle
squad, a youth division with a strong involvement in the D.A.R.E.
program, a canine division, an accident investigation unit, a crime
scene unit and a special investigations unit.
The bicycle squad is used in the business districts to aid in
traffic control. They act as the liaison officers between the
business community and Chief of Police David Hall, and the Mayor. They meet regularly with senior citizens to aid in any
complaints the seniors may have.
The motorcycle squad is made up of four regular or steady riders and
two spare men. They are used primarily as traffic control officers,
particularly for speed enforcement. The officers do traffic studies
and occasionally are used on special assignments dealing with
troublesome traffic problems such as thru trucking or stop sign
enforcement. They also handle parades and funerals or any other
escorts that are needed. All the motorcycle officers are highly
dedicated individuals.
Fire Districts
Harrison is served by five fire
districts, manned mostly by volunteers and supplemented by career
firefighters in the Downtown District only.
District #1, the West Harrison area, covers eleven square
miles and is entirely manned by volunteer firefighters.
westharrisonfd.org
District #2, the Downtown area, has fourteen career
firefighters and 70 volunteer firefighters.
District #4, Purchase area is served by 50 volunteer
firefighters.
www.purchasefd.com
Each Department elects its own chiefs and officers. All firefighters
attend drills and training sessions, to maintain and improve their
firefighting and rescue skills, so that they can function at maximum
efficiency when needed.
FIRE PROTECTION DISTRICTS
Fire Protection District #3 is served by the Rye City Fire
Department, under a contract with Harrison. It is a small section
close to the Rye border.
Fire Protection District #5, North Castle Border is served by
the West Harrison Fire District #1.
Harrison has an excellent fire insurance rating, which reflects the
opinion of the insurance companies that we have good Departments and
good protection.
Harrison EMS
Harrison EMS Contributed by Chief Joe
Bilotto
The Harrison Volunteer Ambulance Corps, headed by Chief Joe Bilotto, is a not-for- profit organization committed to providing
the highest standard of care to its residents. Located at 2 Pleasant
Ridge Road, it is a volunteer organization dedicated to helping
their fellow neighbors in times of distress.
HVAC is a Basic and Advanced Life Support Provider. Patient
transport is designed to ensure that each resident who requires HVAC
services, is offered transport to the hospital of their choice
unless the respective condition warrants transport to a closer
hospital or a specific hospital determined by the medical need.
We are actively looking for volunteers who would like to join our
Ambulance Corps. If you are interested in joining and becoming more
involved with the community, please feel free to contact us at
914-921-0100 and leave a message.

Visitors
to the Purchase Free Library find us charming. We are members of the
Westchester Library System, but our physical plant is very
old-fashioned; one might even say quaint. Located at 3093 Purchase
Street in the Purchase Community House, a Harrison landmark, we
occupy the space that originally belonged to the Purchase Post
Office.
While our exterior and interior spaces are traditional, our
collections of books, DVD’s, Talking Books and magazines are
decidedly up to the minute. Because our space is so small, we have
to choose our materials very carefully, with an eye to both quality
and public demand. We have a very courteous and friendly staff. As
part of the Westchester Library System, we have access and can
obtain for you any book, DVD, book on tape or CD in the county,
usually in a matter of days.
We have an active Friend’s group that has sponsored and will
continue to sponsor many worthwhile programs for adults and
children. If you wish your name added to the Friends contact list or
would like to become more involved, please contact the library.
HARRISON PUBLIC LIBRARY AND WEST HARRISON BRANCH:
Library Director: Virginia Weimer Vogl
The Harrison Public Library and West Harrison Branch are chartered
by the State of New York to serve the residents of the Town-Village
of Harrison. The library welcomes people of all ages to pursue their
goals for self-enrichment and lifelong learning. A library card is
free to all Harrison residents and to those who work, attend school
or own property in Harrison. The library is a member of the
Westchester Library System, and a Harrison Library card is honored
at all 38 public libraries in Westchester.
Collections include a wide variety of materials, including over
104,000 books, video cassettes, compact discs, books-on-tapes,
magazines, large print books, and toys. In addition, literacy, job
information, and business reference books are available. Our public
catalog in CD-ROM and automated on-line format is available for use
at both buildings. Microcomputers and software are available for use
in the Children's Departments of both library facilities.
Interlibrary loan, Internet and database searching are available.
Our children's librarians give personal attention to children, their
families, and teachers, in selecting materials for school work and
reading. Toddlers, pre-schoolers and school-age children can enjoy a
variety of activities throughout the year. In addition to weekly
pre-school story time, our librarians conduct film, computer and
craft programs, and on special occasions guest artists are featured.
A highlight of every year is our summer reading game which generates
reading excitement among the many young participants. Concerts,
lectures and art exhibits are regularly scheduled in the Library's
community room. The room is also available to civic and community
organizations for meetings. The Friends of the Harrison Public
Library, a volunteer organization, helps support library services
with contributions that sponsor programs for adults and children and
enhance the Library's collection. Membership information is
available at all the service desks in the Library.
