HARRISONITES of all ages are offered a comprehensive and diversified program of leisure time services under the auspices of the Harrison Recreation Department 670-3035. Year round indoor activities are conducted in the department's three community centers. Programs are designed to meet the interests and needs of pre-schoolers through senior citizens.

Outdoor activities including swimming, tennis, softball, baseball, and picnicking are enjoyed in community parks and on school fields. Five day camp programs are conducted throughout the community during the months of July and August.

Spicing the programs are special events including Spring Egg Hunts, Halloween Programs, Summer Concerts, and Sports Tournaments. An annual "It's Great to Live in Harrison/ Columbus Day Celebration" is held in October featuring a parade of marching bands and community organizations followed by a "fiesta" in the park across from the municipal building.

Program brochures and fliers are available at the recreation office in the municipal building and community centers. Residents are urged to visit the centers and/or recreation main office for additional information.

Harrison has two very active Senior Citizens Clubs, sponsored by the Recreation Department.

The West Harrison Group meets on Thursday, from 12:00 p.m. through 3:00 p.m. at the Leo Mintzer Community Center, 251 Underhill Avenue to discuss items of interest, play bingo, and discuss activities coming up in the near future. Dues are $24.00 per year. Refreshments are served.

The Downtown Group meets every Friday from 12:00 p.m. through 3:00 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building, 210 Halstead Avenue. Dues are $24.00 per year. Refreshments are served. We also have a drop-in center at the Harrison Community Center, 216 Halstead Avenue, available Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. where you may enjoy television, cards and socializing. Tuesday exercise classes from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Harrison Community Center.

The Visiting Nurse Services in Westchester visits our Senior Citizens Centers on a monthly basis to provide free blood pressure screening. The nurse is available at the Harrison Community Center from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and at the Mintzer Community Center from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Contact the office for specific dates. Flu shots are administered once a year in October by the Westchester County Public Health Nurses. If you have Medicare Part B, it is free -- if not -- there is a fee.

Both groups participate in many activities including luncheons, day trips, overnight trips, special movie dates, exercise and line dancing classes, just to name a few. All Seniors are very welcomed to join the nearest center and to participate in all its activities. For further information on recreation and social activities, call the Senior Citizens Center, at 670-3000, x-3172.
